Are all magnesium supplements the same?

Updated: Sep 16

Short answer? No. There are many types of magnesium supplements on the market today that support a variety of conditions. Often magnesium will be the go-to supplement to support with minimising muscle cramps, assist sleep and help reduce stress and nervous tension. There are multiple types of magnesium, and many brands may only have 2 or 3 types in the one supplement and they are often made up with a lot of fillers so we may not always get the full effect that is possible when taking a high quality supplement. They can come in many different forms such as capsules, tablets and powder, some even come in granular form such as magnesium sulfate, flake and liquid form such as magnesium chloride for topical treatments.

What are the different types of magnesium their benefits?

Magnesium citrate                         General, digestion, migraines, calming

Magnesium oxide                           Laxative, very low bioavailability

Magnesium sulfate                        Espom salts, calming, muscle relaxation

Magnesium chloride                     General, high bioavailability, skin, digestion, calming

Magnesium glycinate                    Mood, sleep, calm

Magnesium diglycinate                General bioavailability, mood, sleep, nervous system

Magnesium malate                        Energizing, stimulates ATP production

Magnesium L-treonate                 Brain health, learning, concentration, nervous system

Magnesium bi-carbonate            General

Magnesium taurate                        Heart health, general calm, blood sugar regulation

Magnesium orotate                        Heart health, general health

Magnesium lisenate                      Gastric health, muscle relaxation, nerve health

Magnesium aspartate                   Cellular energy, general health

As you can see there are a variety of magnesium types and each of them offering something different. Some people find they are little sensitive to taking magnesium, at times experiencing nausea or digestion disruption but often it is a case finding one that works for your body.

Discuss with your health practitioner if magnesium supplementation will be suitable for you and what brands they recommend.
